What is a tortuous artery?

A tortuous artery refers to a blood vessel that has an abnormally twisted, curved, or winding path. This condition can occur naturally due to aging, hypertension, or congenital factors, and is often seen in arteries like the carotid or coronary. Tortuosity can make medical procedures more challenging, as navigating devices through these vessels requires greater flexibility and precision. It may also affect blood flow and increase the risk of complications such as stroke or ischemia. In interventional procedures, specialized tools like hydrophilic guidewires are often used to safely access and treat areas within tortuous arteries.
