What are the benefits of using hydrophilic wires in interventional procedures?
Hydrophilic guidewires offer several benefits in interventional procedures. Their specialized coating absorbs fluid, creating a slick surface that significantly reduces friction. This allows the wire to glide smoothly through tortuous or narrowed vessels, improving navigation and reducing trauma to vessel walls. Hydrophilic wires are especially useful in complex anatomies or when crossing tight lesions.
They also enhance procedural efficiency by minimizing resistance and the need for excessive manipulation. However, their slipperiness can reduce tactile feedback, so they are often used in combination with other wire types for optimal control and support throughout the procedure.
